Complementary Activities to the Master’s Dissertation

Besides the master’s dissertation, theoretical research projects must include: disclosure in at least one scientific event (congress, symposium, meeting or similar), with publication in its annals and/or a specialized QUALIS CAPES journal.

Besides the master’s dissertation, theoretical-practical research projects in composition, instrument and conducting (performance) must include: a master’s recital for research in instrument and conducting (performance) or a master’s composition for research in composition.

The master’s recital and composition are considered part of the end of course assignment and will be evaluated by the same judging committee responsible for judging the master’s dissertation. They may be presented at the same public defense session as the dissertation or at a complementary session, at the discretion of the research supervisor. The documentation of this work must accompany the final version of the dissertation to be delivered within 60 (sixty) days after the dissertation defense.

Complementary Activities to the Doctoral Thesis

Besides the doctoral thesis, students must do the following activities:

For exclusively theoretical research: two monographs.

For theoretical-practical research in composition: one monograph and two compositions (I and II).

For theoretical-practical research in instrument and conducting (performance): one monograph and two recitals (I and II).

Monograph I and II are complete papers written according to the standard of scientific journals in the area. Composition I and II comprise the presentation of an original and complete musical piece produced by the student. Recital I and II include mounting, producing and recording a full musical performance created by the student. Monograph I and II, Composition I and Recital I must be completed by the fifth (5th) semester, prior to the qualifying exam. These activities will be evaluated by a judging committee composed of the supervisor and two doctorate-holding members, following the same criteria used to form the qualifying exam judging committee.

Note: At the discretion of the Program Committee, the publication of a paper in a specialized journal rated as A1, A2, B1 or B2 in the QUALIS CAPES classification may be accepted in substitution for the examination of each one of the monographs by the judging committee. Composition II and Recital II are considered part of the end of course assignment and will be evaluated by the same judging committee responsible for the evaluation of the doctoral thesis, and may be presented at the same public defense session of the thesis or in a complementary session, at the discretion of the research supervisor. The documentation of this work must accompany the final version of the thesis to be delivered within 60 (sixty) days after the thesis defense.
